George W Aikman (1831- 1905), Painter of landscapes, portraits and town scenes in oil, and watercolour. After leaving HS George Aikman went on to study at the Trustees School of Design under Robert Scott Lauder. Initially he trained as an engraver, working for his father. He also contributed illustrations to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He specialised in moorland and woodland scenes which often used sombre browns. His coastal and harbour scenes used more silver- grey tones demonstrating the influence of The Hague School.He was an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
