William Cosens Way was born in Torquay the son of an artist. He painted landscapes, coastal scenes and genre in watercolour. He studied under his father before going to South Kensington School of Art to obtain a masters certificate in teaching. He was recommended to Newcaste School of Art and Design where he held the post of director for 32 years. He also held directorships at Sunderland and North Shields schools of art. In 1895 he retired from education and became a full time artist and teacher until his death. He exhibited through out his life at the Royal Academy, The New Watercolour Society, the Suffolk Gallery as well as many provincial galleries. His works can be seen at the British Museum, The Victoria and Albert, Hatton Gallery, Laing Gallery, Shipley Gallery and Sunderland Gallery.
