Bernard Benedict Hemy (1845 - 1913). Marine and Coastal painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Newcastle to Henry F. Hemy, brother to Charles Napier Hemy and Thomas Marie Madawaska. He lived in Australia for some two and a half years. When returning to Newcastle he studied at the School of Art in Newcastle, before leading a seafaring life whilst preparing for priesthood. Neither of these retained his interest and he returned to his love of painting. He first practised as a professional artist at North Shields in the period of 1875 -77 he sent his first works for exhibition at the Suffolk Street Gallery and the Dudley Gallery, London. He next showed his work at the exhibition of works by local painters at the Central Exchange Art Gallery, Newcastle. He also exhibited at the Berwick Club, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and elsewhere. Represented at the Laing Art Gallery and other Art Galleries at Sunderland, South Sheilds and Bootle.
