William Shayer (Senior) (1787-1879). Landscape and animal painter, largely self-taught, Shayer lived in Southampton and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. His work falls into two distinct categories; firstly woodland scenes with gypsies, rustic figures and animals, and secondly beach or coastal scenes with boats and fisherfolk. He was a prolific artist and exhibited 338 works at Suffolk Street and also at the Royal Academy between 1820 and 1843 and the British Institution. His work is in many provincial museums.
