William Knell - William Adolphus Knell (fl. 1825 - 1874). London marine Painter, probably the father of William Calcott Knell Subjects tended to be views of the English coast, he also painted French, Dutch and Belgian coasts. In 1847 his Destruction of Toulon won 2nd prize in Westminster Hall competitions. For Queen Victoria he painted The landing of the Prince Regent at Dover and The View of the Fleet at Spithead. He also illustrated a book on naval history. Works by Knell are in the New Gallery, Edinburgh, Derby and York Art Gallery.
