Wilson - John Jock Wilson (1774 - 1845)

John Wilson - John Jock Wilson (1774 - 1845) - Born in Ayr, Scotland in 1774. A marine painter who was apprenticed to the house painter John Norie of Edinburgh, after he had lessons from A. Nasmyth. He taught drawing in Montrose for two years before becoming a scene painter at Astleys. He was an honorary member of the Scottish Academy in 1827, and exhibited with them as well as the Royal Academy, the British Institute and the Society of British Artists. He visited France and Holland and in later life lived in Folkestone, Kent, where he died.
