Chambers - John Chambers (1852-1928)

John Chambers (1852-1928). Landscape, seascape and portrait painter in oil and watercolour. He was born at South Shields and attended the Union British Schools, which encouraged him to draw marine subjects. He did for a short period become a pilot but left this in favour of study at Government school of Design at Newcastle. He also went to study in Paris. Most of his work was done in watercolour portrayed local landscapes and nautical situations. He did do some atypical pieces in the form of portraits among these one of Henry Hetherington Emmerson which is being shown in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle.
